The project’s main areas of research

The project aims to investigate the tradition of the Oxford Calculators and the influence hat their works had on early-modern logic and natural philosophy in Europe. The project’s focus are the modal theories developed by the Calculators, with a particular attention to their use of the concepts of impossibility and imaginability, and their applications of these concepts in logic and in scientific thought experiments.

In the first 2 years of the project, the project focused on 4 main areas of research, all of them linked to the specific objectives described in the project’s application: 1) medieval modalities; 2) the logic of impossibility; 3) the Oxford Calculators; 4) imagination and thought experiments.
